I wasn’t sure if this had already been posted and beat to death…. but apparently, Floyd Mayweather thinks that he and other boxers could whipe the floor with any ufc fighter. he said….
“UFC’s champions can’t handle boxing. That’s why they are in UFC.” Mayweather said Tuesday from Las Vegas during a break in training. “Put one of our guys in UFC and he’d be the champion. Any good fighter, he’d straight knock them out.”
“Take Chuck Liddell,” Mayweather said of the UFC’s biggest star and light heavyweight champion (about 205 pounds). “Put him in the ring with a (boxer) who is just 10-0 and Chuck Liddell would get punished.”
So you’d punish a UFC champion, too?
“Come on, man. What’d you think? Am I just 10-0?”
I almost died of laughter when I read this… I had my entire office read it and they all laughed too. Anyone else think this is pure crap? It’s almost as funny as guys who say… “defending the shoot takedown is as easy as a knee to his face!” LOL

The boxer was the one that made the claim that he could step into the octagon and chew up UFC fighters…. not the other way around.

I see your point, but the same can be said for anyone with athletic ability. So you learn how to punch… I don’t know how many people i have seen Cro Cop punish with leg kicks to the point of them quitting. MMA is just too much of a rounded game for a boxer to step up and say they would own. Boxing is just ONE part of the whole fight equation. I would still take a mediocre MMA fighter against a good boxer in a raw fight any day.

maybe or maybe not. It depends. If you have UFC fighter do only boxing in the ring, then boxer would have the advantage and will win most of time. But if you have boxer do no rule fight against UFC fighter, then UFC fighter would eat em up for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

ok, i’m going to play REASONABLE devil’s advocate here and qualify his statement to where it makes sense.
MAYBE that is where he is coming from.
Obviously, if anyone who isn’t blind can watch old ufc fights to see what would happen to a straight puncher (boxer) when facing off against a grappler when the boxer has no ground game. Granted, Mayweather is probably not the smartest bull in the alligator farm but if you peel away all the bulls hit there is some truth in the heart of his statement to the effect that on average I would say a boxer is more skilled at fighting and RAW talent than a person in the ufc.
HOWEVER- he didn’t train under those rules- HAD SOMEONE WITH THE NATURAL ATHLETICISM AND SKILL THAT IT TAKES TO BE A PRO BOXER TRAINED IN MMA- they would surely excel.
that is not the case though- boxers DO NOT, because there isn’t the same money in it so therefore those with “upper” talent levels and natural ability to fight are going to gravitate towards boxing because of the money. Only a retard or carrot top would do otherwise.
So if you qualify his statement to: “IF a boxer HAD trained in MMA, and took his natural ability, AND BOXING and MMA skill into the ufc, then he would punish a ufc fighter”.
Ok- maybe there is much speculation even with this- however at least that makes sense and doesn’t seem like religious “faith based” “logic” (or what passes for it in religious debate).
I think that makes a more relevant point for discussion that actually passes the “laugh test”.
Mayweather always runs his mouth like a moron. he has no clue what he is doing, ya he would have a strikers chance in the octagon but what would he do when he was on the ground? As soon as he was taken down and on the ground where he has no training, he would be done in under a second, he could be submitted quicker then you can blink your eyes. Mayweather always talks out of his a** and this is just more proof. Sure he could get lucky and catch the UFC fighter with a punch but I would put my money on teh UFC 9 times out of 10. It is just like when there used to be the debate of how Tyson could do in the octagon. Mayweather just realize that he could easily be caught and taken down because I am sure he has no take down defense.
It’s pure crap. Take a boxer off his feet and his in trouble if not done right there. There is no ground and pound in boxing, and Mayweather is giving away 50 lbs. to Liddell. Boxers have trouble with grapplers, just like any striker has trouble with grapplers, but the one dimensional aspect of pure boxing against an assortment of various strikes coupled with grappling spells the end of a pure boxer. Mayweather is just talking trash.
Floyd would have a excellent “punchers” chance. There has never been a high calibur boxer who has made the transition from boxing to mma so people who flat out say “oh he stands no chance” are wrong to have that opinion.
I remember a time when there was this big influx of K-1 and K-2 fighters switching over to MMA back in the late 90s – early 00′s and there was alot of people saying “oh they arnt well rounded, they stand no chance against a guy like Ken Shamrock”
Look at Crocop, the guy is a fantastic Kickboxer, but ask any knowlegable MMA fan and they know he hasnt got the Ground skills of some other fighters out there. Yet, Crocop is looked at as the number 2 fighter in the world.
So to say Mayweather has no chance is rediculous, the guy is a legendary boxer, If he could keep the fight standing then he has the possibility of destroying ANY person in his weight class.
I agree, that is hilarious. I think Floyd Mayweather is just trying to bring boxing back into the picture. He’s probably getting paid millions to make himself sound like a complete moron. Boxing is a joke compared to mma. How could a person who is training only one small fraction of mma going to beat one who knows all factors. I would like to hear what the Gracie’s have to say about this. I bet we never see this happen. If Floyd was so sure of himself, I’m sure Dana White wouldn’t mind using him as an example. Plus, that would be a gold mine for both boxing and UFC. It would be a sell out crowd with millions watching at home. I would love it!
I dont care how good the boxer a decent MMA fighter could take him. Boxing is an INSANELY limited style. They can only use 1/4 the weapons on there body 1/2 the time. Plus it would probably be an easy takedown at which point the boxer is done
I have been saying this ever since I saw the first UFC event a long a s s time ago. These guys would beat boxers no doubt, and the reasons are obvious so I won’t even waste my time listing them. A professional muay thai fighter or jiu jitsuist would beat a boxer of the same level, so I’m not sure what Mayweather is talking about. I would like to see Mayweather go to Thailand and fight some of those guys over there at the same weight in Muay Thai, he would come back not so pretty. Bottom line is that he probably knows he is full of s h i t, but is trying to draw attention to himself to sell his upcoming rip off vs. De La hoya.
well any smart person would know that he is just running his mouth , I think dana white should look into this , and make that punk put his money where his mouth is , well see how mayweather defends againt matt huges take down , and we will see if mayweather is still talkin once matt huges is sittng on him and punching him in the face over and over again! haha id love to see that.
Floyd would have a small chance. It is true that the punching skills of a boxer are a million times better than a good UFC fighter. So Floyd could KO the fighter with a vicious combo. I mean you have never seen that kind of speed anywhere in MMA.
What happens though is the MMA fighter if he is smart will shoot at the legs and try to wrap up before Floyd can land any shots. Then take floyd down and finish him.
I do like the fact that Floyd is making the comparison because it brings out the fact that UFC fighters are underpaid. I hear people saying well Liddell makes good money at $ 1 million but its not relative to the same star level in boxing. Oscar is probably going to make $ 20 million for this fight. If UFC fighters are in as much demand as boxers then they should demand more. The elite level boxers like Oscar, Floyd, Pacman are paid better or as good as NFL and MLB players. You just can’t say that about MMA fighters. I hope these type of discussions could bring up the pay of MMA stars.
Seriously Mayweather is right in one sense it would make no financial sense for someone to pursue MMA if they had the talent for boxing.
Though anything can happen in the ring, and boxers can hit hard, even a champion boxer would get pasted in the UFC.
Now, UFC guy limited to boxing rules, that is different.
But boxer in the UFC? Good night. They’ve tried it since UFC 1 when nearly everyone sucked They’ve lost repeatedly, nothing more to add on the subject.
no doubt a boxer like mayweather would wipe the floor with a mma or ufc fighter,under boxing rules and visa versa.common sense tells you though that you couldn’t take a fighter who only has 2 weapons and a completely different set of rules and put him in a situation where the rules are completley different and the opponent(depending?)has as many weapons as he knows how to use and win.of course though thats not factoring in the pure dumb luck rule.lol.
no doubt though if you put CL in a ring with mayweather under boxing rules he would get theshit beat out of him.
