Question by Evan: Starting an MMA club in highschool?
I’m 16 years old, a sophmore in highschool. I’m on the volleyball team, but I’m not too involved with the school. I want to be more involved, and a way to do this is to join a club. None of the clubs interest me, so I’ve been thinking about starting a MMA club.

Students have the poer to create clubs with permission of the administration. How it would work is at lunch anybody could come in, we’d sit down and just discuss the sport. We could talk about different topics on different days. One day we might talk about Pride FC, another we might talk about the Lightweight division, etc. Maybe even watch past fights. Here’s the problems:

    1) Not many students I’ve talked to have heard of MMA. They either think it’s “cagefighting” or “UFC”. They have a false definition of what MMA really is. They think the UFC is a sport, and that BJJ is the same as MMA. Or, they just aren’t interested in it. OR the kids think MMA is “gay”, and that its just men rolling around on the floor.

    2) The administration might not allow me to host an MMA club. Some adults have a bad idea about MMA and think it’s brutal and human cockfighting. I’d have to convince them it’s ok to have us talk about the sport.

*NOTE* THIS IS NOT A FIGHT CLUB. I WANT TO EDUCATE THE TEACHERS/STUDENTS ABOUT THE SPORT. We would talk about MMA, fighters, techniques, etc. We would NOT be fighting after school or anything like that!

How do I go about doing this? Should I talk to my 10th grade counsler? How should I introduce the idea? I have plenty of reasons of how to show her that MMA is safe(or at least as safe as football) sport, and that it is “school friendly”.

They have probably seen ads on t.v. Blood smeared all over the canvas, pounding while laying on the ground etc. To call it a blood sport is being kind. To call it human cock fighting is more accurate. organized viewing of this brutality at school would not be allowed, at least at any decent school.

You are correct that a school probably would not want to endorse an mma club, even if it was just a fan club. That would be a tough sell to the principal.

Also, while I know there are some lame clubs in high school (I remember being in the French club to pad my resume – we met once a year in the French teacher’s room and did absolutely nothing!), a “club” for people to just sit around and talk about a sport seems pretty worthless. Most high school clubs do something active or useful.

You could always start an unofficial club – just put up signs. Or you could join the wrestling team. Most wrestlers these days watch mma and mess around with BJJ on the side.

“a mma club” not “an mma club”

you could start a club, theres a huge fan base at most schools and if there isnt at your school, show them ufc 119 this saturday and it will be the most popular club.
