UFC 131 Fight Card: Early Predictions for Every Fight

Bleacher Report’s Tim McTiernan: UFC 131 has just had a major shake up. Originally the main event was to be Brock Lesnar vs. Junior dos Santos for the No. 1 contendership to the heavyweight title. Unfortunately, a flare up of diverticulitis has forced Lesnar to pull out of the scheduled bout. Luckily for the UFC, Shane Carwin was set to fight on that card already, and he agreed to move up into …

Question by Wilburt Mezeran: Why are so many people so ignorant about MMA? [Or UFC or Ultimate Fighting as they incorrectly call it]?
If I hear one more person say the “UFC” has no rules, its unregulated, etc. I’m going to puke. You do NOT simply throw 2 guys in a cage! These are the most highly trained athletes in the world.

    1) THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “ULTIMATE FIGHTING” The “UFC” is the name of a company! Right now, it is the largest, but it is only 1 company, the sport is MMA – Mixed Martial Arts. A combination of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Muy Thai and Judo just to name a few. A competitor MUST be versed in standing AND grappling styles – hence the term MIXED Martial Arts.

    2) MMA is HIGHLY regulated. FOUR doctors at every event, Pre and Post fight medical evaulations. Medical insurance at the events paid for by the promotor. There is also random steroid testing at all times.

    3) There are MANY rules all MMA events must adhere to enforced by state athletic commissions who are in attendence of every event. Unified rules available here:

I think the UFC’s rule are pretty fair now considering. Back in the old days though the rules were pretty loose.

Because Mixed Martial Arts is a fairly new sport, it’s taking the media a while to catch up with the proper name for the sport, and it’s taking them a while to accurately describe what takes place in the sport. Unfortunately, since most people believe what the media reports, they are at the mercy of the media’s ignorance. Mixed Martial Arts is the proper name for the sport, but ‘Ultimate Fighting’ was a term that was used back when the UFC was the only sanctioned Mixed Martial Arts medium that was around at the time. For that reason it will probably always be referred to as Ultimate Fighting. It’s just like Full-Contact Karate being referred to as Western Kickboxing. It always was both Full-Contact Karate and kickboxing, it just had a different name depending on who you were speaking to.

Because people don’t take the time to actually look into the sport. They all want to say it’s a knock ouff of boxing or affiliated with the WWE. Most people who say that haven’t even watched an event, let alone been to see one.

    5. Wulf -Troll Ripper says:

Most real MA know this. Those that do not are just spectators wanting to think they know something about it imo MOST times.

    6. Rocco says:

A lot of people are ignorant to this sport. They dont know what they are talking about. MMA – UFC and all other fight clubs are great. They are all regulated to a certain aspect otherwise people like John McCain will jump in and ruin it.

    7. trev says:

Any true fan of the sport, knows better. I just ignore what they say usually. If I puked every time I heard something similar to that, I’d probably die from puking.

    8. katana172 says:

Because many people do not take the time to research or even learn about something before they express an opinion on it. It is human nature.

I can definetly feel your frustration. Quite honestly there is no differance between the poeple you are talking about and all of the UFC fans and posers on here always slamming traditional arts, or saying stuff like BJJ is the best. Yes it is a great style, but put it up against more than one attacker and it will not be the best. the fact is yes there are a lot of bad schools out there, but we don’t need people slamming stuff when all they know is what they see in movies and on tv, and have never trained a day in their life.

I respect people that really train for MMA’s. It takes a lot of dedication and determination to train anything, and I respect the real people for that. I still wish they would call it something like mixed fighting, because that is generally the only side of the martial arts it shows, not the other stuff, but hey thats just me.

Most of the people who say the stuff you elude to are just ignorent. Of course the UFC and other MMA organizations have brought some of it on themselves, with stuff like the antics of the guys on TUF. I like what Dana White did this year on TUF, making them fight their way on. Maybe now we wont have double deckers and drunken brawls, because the guys had to earn it and it was not given to them, and maybe people will see what it is meant to be.

Did anyone else feel so bad for the kid that had to leave because of the rash? Heartbreaking man.

unless it was some queef coming out of bill o reily’s mouth but I don’t pay attention to chimpanzees masquerading as humans.

    10. Fook A says:

You are not alone. Idiot fanboys exist whenever there is a new craze. The worst part about these fanboys is that they think they know how to fight no after watching a few MMA matches. They try to do an armbar without ever having learned one from a dojo and they try doing high roundhouses…. it’s terrible.

    11. That Guy says:

I applaud you. Just dont turn to the first page, someone asked “how do you not consider UFC a bloodsport” Sorry I probably made you puke. Drink some water. =]

Great and excellent facts on this page.
