Question by Matt C: Why do people not like UFC’s “control” of MMA?
I keep reading what various people say and theres a group of people out there (Mainly Pride and Fedor fanboys) how Dana White and the UFC “manipulate” MMA and treat people like dogs and underpay fighters.
Can someone give me a legit reason as to why you want fighters not in the UFC?
Would you really like it if there were 3 NFL type leagues or NBA type leagues and you had to consitantly wonder who was better and bicker like school kids because Lakers and Celtics played in two different leagues and never faced each other, but dominated their own leagues?
I also dont get how dana white is such a hard ass…. every league is like that… you have to wear suits to NBA stadiums as a player, the NFL has like 8,000 dresscode rules, if Rampage was in the NFL he would be suspended. In the UFC, we dont get to miss him fight any.
His fighters are underpaid? They get paid thousands of dollars to punch people in the face… thats not exactly a job that should be worth alot of money. I mean he cant afford to pay them like football players
Legit explaination from someone Anti UFC or Dana White?

Lets put it this way. I would absolutely love it if all the best mixed martial artists were all in one organization. Just like how the best basketball, football and baseball players are all in the NBA, NFL, MLB.
But I understand its a business, and I know that this cant always happen. I wont blame anyone as im not in the meetings and dont know exactly what is going down and why deals cant be reached. I wont blame Fedor or Dana, but I just know it does suck.
Also, in regards to your last answer, I know Pulver beat Penn before, but I was referring to their most recent fight. Pulver looked undersized and went back down to 145 for his next fight.
I believe you’re 100% right. There should be a one major promotion where all the best figters fight only the best fighters. The thing I don’t care for is Dana’s strong arm tactics he uses with the fighters to get what he wants.
Mainly going back to when he briefly banned Jon Fitch and everyone who fought at AKA and more recently him not allowing the fighters to promote for their sponsors.
In the future I’d like to see a Figter Association formed to prevent these kinds of things from happening JUST LIKE THE NFL has.
Dana and Zuffa control every aspect of the fighter’s life and basically own his ass until whenever they decide they don’t need him anymore.
They forced fighters earlier this year to sign away their image rights forever so they could put them in the video game. Anyone who didn’t sign, like Jon Fitch, was released from the UFC. Fitch was only brought back into the fold after he signed an agreement.
They underpay fighters and are now even taking a piece of their sponsorship money. Brock Lesnar made $ 400k for a fight with Frank Mir that he probably would’ve made $ 30 million for if the fight took place in boxing.
Zuffa also tries to re-write their history in the media in terms of their role in MMA history as well as fighters and regularly undermine fighters publically who don’t sign with them (see: Emelianenko, Fedor).
and they even tried to intimidate non-UFC fighters by saying that anyone who agreed to be in EA’s upcoming MMA game would be “banned for life” from the UFC.
Lesnar’s fight purse may have been $ 400k, but he makes far more than that for a fight. He gets a portion of the PPV revenue which makes hime several million dollars from a single fight. Additionally, he makes money from sponsorship. Other top fighter have similar contracts that net them PPV revenue as well: Couture, Liddell, Rampage, etc. So before you are going to spout off about fighters being under paid, get your facts in order.
Wanting to control a fighter’s image in perpetuity is pretty sketchy. No argument there, but its not all that different than what EA does with the NFL, NBA and other major sports leagues. The difference there is that the players have a union to represent them. I’m sure something along those lines is coming for MMA as well. Keep in mind that every major sports organization did the same thing in their early years.
Another complaint that people constantly bring up is the cutting of fighters, but pro athletes who don’t perform get cut from the MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL all the time, so this is a non-point.
