Question by Deb: Whats with this whole “Android” thing with cell phones now, all the ones I like have?
that android option and the phone companies want to charge a person $ 20-30 bucks a month to use these phones, saying well it’s like an operating system so the phone will work, but I have my internet on my computer and will never ever use internet on a phone, so if I want a particular looking phone with the other features that I like, then what?, I gotta pay a monthly fee for that one option on the phone that I will never use???? That just doesn’t make sense to me, this whole thing still isn’t clear to me how it works, can anyone enlighten me?

Its not an Android thing, its a smartphone thing and of course a moneymaking thing for the cell phone companies.

Android is an OS for mobile devices. It basically turns any mobile device that can run andriod into a computer. A very small, slow computer.

you really dont need it, unless you need constant access to the internet.

as for the monthly fee, im sorry, but phone companies are mean. if you dont want to pay it, you need a phone without internet capabilities, or a new provider.

Basically Android phones are called Smart Phones. They have internet access and everything like that. There are the regular phones which I do not believe cost monthly. If internet, music, and apps are not necessary for you (and considering the pricing of the phone), then go with a normal cell phone. On the other hand, if you have a job that could use internet and email wherever you are, then I highly recommend a smart phone.

      1) Smartphones all need data connection, which costs extra. That ain’t new. It’s been the case since the iPhone came out 5 YEARS ago.

      2) If you don’t need Internet on a phone, you don’t need a smartphone at all. You just need a touch-screen phone.

Android is simply the software that certain phones run off of. An Operating System

Just like some other phones have iOS (Apple), BlackBerry OS, Symbian (for Nokia phones) and Windows based phones.

It’s all about preference and what functionality you want.

So do you have to have a data plan and extra charges every month just to use a Smartphone? NO

But, to do this you would have to buy your Smartphone out of contract, which means instead of getting a new Android (or whatever) phone for say $ 50-200 dollars, you will have to pay more like $ 400-$ 500 depending on if you buy used or new.

Plus doing it that way, really cripples the functionality of the phone, you cannot use the many built-in and really essential features. It would only be able to make calls, text if you have that feature, and maybe Wifi (if the phone does that).

…So if you are not a internet addict and or you don’t need to check your email on the go, play music, videos from youtube..etc.. then you really shouldn’t get a Smart phone or Data plan.

Then you don’t have to pay extra monthly fees for things you are not going to use =)
