Question by Malcolm uses Xbox 360 Avatar: Why do the shows like “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars” ended at 9:01, 10:02 PM?
Shouldn’t it be exactly an hour, not an hour plus?

Sometimes these “live” shows need just a few more minutes because they usually run over.

I don’t really know the “why” but I do know how much hassle it is for me to record those on my DVR when the show isn’t “scheduled” to run over. AI was scheduled to run over by one minute last night, but it was more like 5!
As for the why, I think it’s to try to get more tv viewers to watch their show. You turn to a channel to catch the next program but this one is still on and you watch it any way and then they hope you want to watch it the next night or week.
